  • I ask this because of an interesting quote I just stumbled upon: “Shyness has a strange element of narcissism, a belief that how we look, how we perform, is truly important to other people.”
  • IMO, shyness is the antithesis of narcissism.
  • Most people are shy because of a fear that they are not good enough to be around other or for a fear of not be accepted. Narcissism is the belief the one's self is extraordinarily beautiful. Its a contradiction.
  • Narcissists have an unnatural desire to get as much attention as possible. You will never meet a shy narcissist. They have a malignant form of self love.
  • Probably. I sometimes act shy to try out my "quiet cool" theory on women, I have been unsuccessful so far.
  • Some people are narcissistic and emotionally selfish and they just call themselves shy. But then others are truly just shy.
  • I personally have never thought to associate the two. Interesting question. I don't think so.
  • No, these people don't know what they are talking about. There are two forms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Shy NPD and Arrogant NPD. (also referred to as Hypervigilant/Oblivious). People with Shy NPD share 4 common traits of those with Arrogant NPD. 1. sense of superiority and uniqueness 2. lack of sustained commitment to others 3. Impaired capacity for empathy 4. Feelings of envy Shy narcissist hate being in the spotlight, they prefer to observe and are hypersensitive to criticism. They tend to not speak up in a crowd. They have problems setting and fulfilling goals because their goals are often lofty and they "know" that they will fail whatever they attempt. They still have grandiose fantasies and feelings of superiority, but they dare not share them due to the risk of criticism and judgment. They come across as modest, humble, and empathetic...but this is rarely the case. For more information just google "shy narcissistic personality disorder". There is a ton of information about the other end of the narcissistic spectrum.

  • You have both words twisted. Unpleasant feelings of self-consciousness are associated with shyness. While narcissism is a mental disorder that develops with an excessive need of admiration.
  • Kidding?
  • I am a chronically shy narcissist.
