  • I think it's a combination of a lot of things Phillis. Lack of motivation on the student's or teacher's part, no parental involvement or encouragement, unassessed/untreated learning disabilities. It could even be drug or alcohol problems or illness .. so many factors.
  • I have a perfect example to answer your question with. . I have a 6 year old son whom I recently signed up for football. He has always enjoyed running yet lacked being able to pay attention. The coaches give him instruction, and I also listen from the sideline. On his off days from football we practice. All I do is repeat what the coaches said. In 4 weeks he has become one of the best on the team. . I hope that made sense.
  • I believe it is a combination of factors, and not all factors will be present in all cases of a student failing. It may be any number of things including: A genuine inability to do the work - this may be due to the student not having a grasp of the subject (and assitance not being given); a learning disorder; or another disorder that requires extra provisions to bring the child up to a level playing field, but which has not been offered. A lack of will to study or work, A lack of support; Circumstances at home, or in the student's private life which may have an affect upon his ability to give his full effort and attention to the work... Many things. Failure is not the same as failing to me. Failing may mean getting a grade D. However, students have their own standards. What is a failure to one, or a failure by offical standards, may be a successful accomplishment for another. For example, assuming a grade D is an offical fail - a student who has consistently struggled with a particular subject, and who has never got higher than a grade E is successful when improving to a grade D. A success for her, but failure by official standards.
  • No student should fail in school, expect for psychological reasons. Teachers will go to the moon to teach a student that is willing to learn, but may have slow learning abilities. There is really no reason for a student to fail. I failed the second grade, only because i was only 5 years old and began way too early. i was still a baby.
  • There are as many reasons why kids fail as there are kids! It could be due to a culture of apathy - that is something that only the school can change. It couls be due to not being challenged - that is something the teachers must change. It could be due to lack of support at home - more common than you think! - that is something the parents can change! It could be due to the exam system - asking irrelevant questions which are outside the sphere of experience of the child - that is something the exam boards can change. It could be the way the material is portrayed - whether in a positive or negative way (eg, today we are going to do algebra, and you will all find this VERY difficult!), similarly, it coule be presented in a way that is patronisingly simple (eg, ok, I know you are 16 years old, but today we are going to use handpuppets to act out the role of Hitler talking to his staff, and if you are very good, i will give you a sweetie (candy)). Or it could be because the material is presented in the same monotonous manner for a whole year - or is backed up by the same endless wordsearches! Or, there could be a conflict in learning style - VAK etc, or even between inductive/deductive styles. One of the main reasons children fail is because they feel helpless - but often that helplessness is a learned feeling - you fail often enough you give up. There has been so much written on children and failure - but most of what makes children fail can be remedied by good communication between the three parties involved: child, parent, school. Or by positive action taken by school and home. Or even by having darned good teachers who consistently revise, review and refine their practice so the children have the opportunities to excel.

It may be home circumstances and problems that distract. The student may have no wish to learn,may be disaffected. Sometimes a home that places no worth on education may be the influence. It may be that a student has not the ability to learn a particular subject. I believe you may fail at a particular thing and not be a failure.
