  • Yes. "Mythbusters" did a show on this, and found that turning the fluorescents off when not using them conserves more energy. The "surge" of power that everyone supposes fluorescents require upon starting them is equalled in less than a second if you leave them on. So by leaving the lights on for more than a second, thinking that you will somehow "save" energy, you are wasting energy in the long run.
  • In the whole lifecycle, you also need to consider the switch... if it costs $100, and lasts for 10,000 switches, will it wear out before or after $100 worth of energy has been saved? The same goes for the tube. ( Including environmental costs of dispoal). In the end, the cost of energy needs to be factored in.
